1. Kota Ternate – although an island- city but administratively also covers other tiny islets of Hiri, Moti & few others in Maluku Sea.

2. Kota Tidore (sometimes called Kota Tidore Kepulauan, its seat/city center in Soasiu) – this city is actually covering areas outside Tidore Island itself, including western part of Central portion of Halmahera (where the provincial capital is now located (Sofifi) also tiny islets around

3. WEST HALMAHERA (Jailolo) – covers western portion of Northern part of Halmahera Island

4. EAST HALMAHERA (Maba) – covers eastern portion of  Central part of Halmahera Island with tiny isles scattered along the bays of Kao & Buli

5. NORTH HALMAHERA (Tobelo– covers large north and central portion of Northern part of Halmahera Island

6. SOUTH HALMAHERA (Labuha– covers South portion of Southern part of Halmahera Island plus Makian island, Kayao island, Bacan archipelago and Obi islands. It’s the only Halmaheran regency which its capital city is not located in the island, instead it’s in Bacan Island. 

7. CENTRAL HALMAHERA (Weda) – covers western portion of Central to Southern part of Halmahera Island & Gebe Island in the Halmahera Sea

8. MOROTAI ISLAND (South Morotai) – occupied the whole island of Morotai

9. KEPULAUAN SULA (Sanana) – covers chained islands of  Taliabu, Mangoli & Sulabesi ( where its capital city is located ) in Seram Sea.
