Note : The east coast’s cities & regencies are of constant highlights even from the sultanates era. Since these region are in the Malacca strait, the plantation and commerce help the people gains more progress than west-coast or highland Tapanuli. These are home to Coastal Malays and The Karos, Simalunguns and Pakpaks.  

*West Coast (Pantai Barat)/Southern Tapanuli Region:

consists of 1 city (Kota) & 4 regencies (Kabupaten)

Note : These regencies are created from older South Tapanuli regency, home to strong devouted Muslim Bataks (Mandailings & Angkolas). They’ve planned to seclude from current North Sumatera Province to join new ‘South-East Sumatera Province.  

*Tapanuli Region :  

consists of 1 city (Kota) & 5 regencies (Kabupaten)

*Nias Islands

2. NIAS (until its status as autonomous city granted in 2008 to Gunung Sitoli city, the seat of Nias regency shall be moved to another place. Somehow as of 2011, the capital of Nias regency remains at the city)
